Game Recap
PRPC away versus Perrysburg High School Yellow Jackets
PRPC SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT (WITH AN ASTERISK *)
The Ice Prowlers stepped onto the ice in their first game of the 2003 Midwest Thanksgiving High School Hockey Classic knowing that they were considered underdogs despite their 7-0 GCHSCHL league record this season. This was their first taste of varsity competition, against the Perrysburg High School Yellow Jackets. The Prowlers came out a little bit apprehensive in the first period, not knowing what to expect from their competition. Perrysburg got on the board first on a power play goal by Kent Schifferly during a 5-on-3 man advantage with 7 minutes left in the first period. Junior Eric Willard had a good chance a few minutes later with goaltender Evan VonEwegen down, but VonEwegen was just able to get a glove on it. PRPC went into the locker room at the intermission down a goal, and down a point in the tournament (1 point per period win, 2 points for the game win). The second period saw PRPC come out playing more of their game. Despite the pickup in play, Perrysburg was able to make it 2-0 6:15 into the period and then go ahead 3-0 two minutes later with a power play goal. That sparked the Ice Prowlers. Not more than a minute after that goal, Sophomore Nick Miller got the Prowlers on the board with a hard work goal assisted by Willard. Then 36 seconds later, Junior Bryan Kay netted a goal from Senior Captain T.J. Hess and Junior Eric Weinhold. This period ended with the scoreboard having PRPC down a goal (3-2), but PRPC earned a half a point for the tournament with the tied period. In the third period, the Prowlers were all over VonEwegen and the Yellow Jackets. They scored early, just over 4 minutes into the period on a goal by Freshman defensman Brian Rossi (assisted by Junior Matt Schuh), but both teams would dig in from there with the scored tied 3-3. PRPC earned a point for the period win, but the game was going to the shootout for overtime. Goaltenders Sophomore Jesse Betts for PRPC and VonEwegan both only gave up one goal each in the first round of 4 shots. It then went to sudden death. Both teams traded goals, saves and missed shots for 10 sudden death rounds before they had to start back at the top of the list of shooters. For three more rounds, both teams stayed even. Then, the 18th round of shooters came up. It started with PRPC's Eric Willard breaking down on goal and burying the puck upstairs on VonEwegen. But, unfortunately, his shot rang of the back crossbar and out. The referee called "no goal". There was a dispute from Willard and the PRPC bench, but to no avail. Jeremy Herman then stepped up to take his shot for Perrysburg and scored on Betts to give his team the 4-3 victory and the two points in the tournament for the game win (Perrysburg 3-1/2 points, PRPC 1-1/2 points). Despite outplaying the Yellow Jackets in the third period, the Prowlers walk away with a few points in the tournament and a bad taste in their mouth going into Saturday's games (11/30/2003) against Dublin Scioto (2:30 PM at the Chiller in Dublin) and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin (9:30 PM at the Chiller in Dublin).
